Rotational power training develops the ability to create, transmit, redirect, and sometimes resist force across the body. The useful unit is not “the core” in isolation; it is the sequence connecting the ground, lower body, pelvis, trunk, and upper body under the timing demands of the task.
Three decisions that organize the work.

Create a base for motion
Rotation needs something to rotate against. Foot pressure, stance, and lower-body force give the pelvis and trunk a useful starting condition rather than asking the spine to manufacture power alone.

Transmit without freezing
Useful stiffness is timed. The trunk may resist motion in one region while allowing or transmitting it elsewhere. Bracing maximally at all times can erase the sequence it is meant to support.

Match the implement to the intent
Cable lifts, landmine variations, medicine-ball throws, carries, and sport implements create different speeds and constraints. Choose the tool for the adaptation instead of calling every diagonal exercise rotational power.

Core-training research uses varied interventions and outcomes, so broad claims about direct sport transfer should be treated carefully. Specific skill still requires specific practice.

Are Russian twists rotational power training?
They may train trunk capacity, but power requires meaningful force expressed quickly. Whether an exercise transfers depends on load, speed, position, and how it fits the larger progression.
Should athletes train anti-rotation or rotation?
Usually both, for different purposes. Athletes need to resist unwanted motion and also create or transmit wanted motion. The sport task and current limitation decide the emphasis.
