Adaptive strength training is a planned system with controlled ways to respond when the athlete or environment changes. Good adaptation does not randomly rewrite the week. It keeps the target quality—such as strength, power, or force absorption—and adjusts dose, movement, range, or placement using current context.
Three decisions that organize the work.

Preserve intent
If the objective is high-force lower-body work, an alternative should still create a meaningful high-force stimulus. Replacing it with an unrelated mobility circuit may feel responsive while quietly removing the adaptation the block was built to produce.

Change the smallest useful variable
Start with dose, rest, range, variation, or equipment before abandoning the whole session. Small changes make the training history legible and reduce the cost of returning to the progression.

Escalate uncertainty
Soreness can be training context; sharp or worsening pain is a different category. An adaptive system should make conservative choices and direct medical questions to qualified professionals.
